Who We Are

Meals On Wheels (Sudbury) was established as a grassroots pilot project in 1971, with the intent to keep people independent in their homes by supplying daily hot nutritious meals. Today, we serve hundreds of local residents delicious and healthy meals every week thanks to our home delivery service.

We assist those in need of nutritional support who need short term (caregiver relief, recuperation, seasonal) or long-term assistance. Meals On Wheels (Sudbury) currently has approximately 37 volunteers. In 2023-2024, these volunteers accumulated over 8,600 hours with our volunteer drivers logging over 116,900 km in deliveries alone.

Our History

In November 1971, in a small room located in the basement of a downtown Larch Street building, a 3-month project began. Five in need Sudburians were chosen to participate. They were to receive meals at a cost of one dollar per dinner, delivered straight to their door by a MOW volunteer.

The founding volunteers believed that a healthy approach to nutrition was the key factor in maintaining an independent and healthy lifestyle.

This belief was what helped initiate this project and sustain it past the 3-month time-line originally proposed.

The pilot year a total of 1038 meals were served.

Two years later, Meals on Wheels (Sudbury) formally became an organization, and a board of directors was elected.

Today we have almost 600 clients and our devoted volunteers deliver between 150-180 meals per day.

In 2023-2024, 37457 hot meals and 11188 frozen meals were served in the Greater Sudbury community, and 116916 km were driven.
